Richards Bay Airport Relocation and Redevelopment
The Municipality is advancing an Airport Relocation and Redevelopment project to establish a regional airport city, boosting economic growth and investment. Registered as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with National Treasury and GTAC in 2018, the full feasibility study was completed in November 2023. Government support includes a Budget Facility for Infrastructure (BFI) submission and Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) registration. With an estimated cost of ZAR1.25 billion, ZAR19 million is allocated for land acquisition, and bulk infrastructure is projected at ZAR230 million. As the project enters the procurement phase, it offers strategic investment opportunities in aviation, logistics, and commercial real estate.

The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) is a world-class investment hub on South Africa’s northeastern coastline, offering prime access to tourism and hospitality opportunities. Strategically located near iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, it serves as a gateway to KwaZulu-Natal’s thriving tourism sector. With planning and environmental approvals in place, Phase 1, valued at R172 million, is fully funded and ready for investors. Future phases require R180 million (Phase 2A) and R306 million (Phase 2B), expanding capacity to meet growing industrial demand. With Township Establishment completed and full Environmental Authorisation secured, the project is fully approved and ready for infrastructure investment. Backed by the KZN CoGTA Urban Development Grant, R130 million is needed to accelerate infrastructure installation. The Steel Bridge is a landmark infrastructure project and the main entrance to the Richards Bay Waterfront, designed to unlock significant economic and tourism potential. Seamlessly integrated into the surrounding wetlands and landscape, it reinforces the precinct’s identity through striking design and strategic connectivity. The bridge supports future developments such as an International Convention Centre (ICC), premium accommodation, and leisure facilities—central to the Municipality’s long-term growth objectives. Its architectural form complements nearby structures, enhancing orientation and creating a memorable arrival experience. With environmental approvals secured and detailed designs fully funded by the Municipality, the project is ready for implementation.
